In defence of Council Housing – Guardian
February 12th, 2016
Just seen a comment in the Guardian underneath an article about owners who decorate their homes artistically.
A troll calling themselves FloodZilla jumps in and complains about the “wealth” of these tenants and is then shot down in flames by the poster below. Wonderful!
Council Housing has nothing to do with being on benefits. Council houses are owned by local authorities, and are generally owned and run profitably. What gets the private landlords of this world all aerated is that these profits are generally reasonable and, as the property is in public ownership, everybody benefits except the private landlords. Its the privaqte landlords making a foirtune and charging astronomical rents that are ‘living at our expense’.
Council Housing should be considered ‘normal housing’. It is for normal people who cant afford (or don’t want) to buy their own house, and who are happy living in houses that look a bit utilitarian (on the outside at least).
Council houses were built cheaply but solidly, to standard plans, but were typically well proportioned, often with good sized gardens. If you aren’t bothered about living in something with Doric columns or bi-fold doors you could do a lot worse.
The houses on the show are expressions of individuality, creativity and style, populated by the type of brave, interesting and eccentric residents that make life worth living. Everyone should have the right to make their home a home, as long as they don’t make life miserable for their neighbours. I know who I’d far rather live next door to, FloodZilla. And it certainly isn’t you.
